A tired girl

I have been trying Arches oil paper. It's great IMO, no gesso needed and its archival. There is a bit of resistance to the paint at first, due to some absorbency I guess, but after that the paint just glides on. So far happy with my new discovery. The painting below is oil on Arches oil paper, 11x7 ins using a muted palette, a brush and then palette knife  impasto in areas.

Abstract figure

I was working on a small painting of a figure that was going nowhere, just not working. So I was left with lots of colourful impasto on my panel, but no figure. What to do? I decided, abstraction, a little figure by use of  the paint already on the panel. 8x6x0.75 ins.

Sad

Over the winter months I have been doing a lot of little studies in oil and acrylic in the hope that one or other might make it to a larger painting. Here is one little work "Sad" oil on panel 8x6x0.75 ins. Brush and palette knife with impasto.

Taking it easy

Take it easy. Acrylic study on MDF panel of a figure sitting., 8x6 ins using impasto.
I was experimenting with complementary colours and impasto textures here, mostly using turquoise, permanent rose, cad lemon,  cobalt blue, translucent yellow and  titanium white.
 

Choral singers

Choral singers. I have been experimenting a lot with acrylics recently, palette combinations and textures. What's great about acrylic paint, is that paint layers can be added so quickly, as they dry fast, as opposed to oil paint, when patience is needed for weeks or months. The problem with acrylic though  is colour shifts from wet to dry and the speed needed to blend the paint on the support surface before it dries. I guess the challenge of the medium is part of the fun. Here is a recent study, acrylic on gessoed MDF panel 8x10 ins.

Barflies 1

Barflies 1. 8x6 ins. An acrylic study of two guys in the corner of a bar. Bright colours and a limited palette, laid down with a palette knife and scraping to exploit the white ground. The simplicity of the shapes and the light appealed to me here.

Frolic
