A semi abstract watercolour of a woman wearing a hat.

A semi abstract watercolour of a woman wearing a hat. 7x4.5 ins fabriano Artistico paper. I liked the abstract quality of the unfinished painting, so I just left it at that.

Watercolour study of an elderly man.

Another study of an old man, again using a fairly limited palette, cad red light, winsor yellow/ raw sienna, cobalt blue and a touch of cerulean blue. Watercolour on fabriano artistico, heavy paper. 7x4.5 ins. It's experimental for me, to try and  keep it  fluid and get the effects I want, and see where I can go.

Watercolour study of an old man.

A watercolour study of an old man. The colours are quite bold and direct. I did not want to labour too much over it and lose the freshness. On Fabriano Artistico 300lbs paper 7 x 4.5 ins. Colours used, cad red light, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, raw sienna and winsor yellow.

Man and a canoe, study in watercolour.

Just a very loose study of a man and a canoe, on a river bank. I will have another go at the theme perhaps, but this one will serve as a study for now. Watercolour on paper 5 x 7 ins fabriano artistico paper. I will need to work on the tones, to get recession and depth? I might try it in oil paint. The great thing about the fabriano paper I use, is that it's 300 lbs weight, so no stretching needed. It took a time getting used to, but now I feel ok with it.

Tyre fitters.

Light and shadow in watercolour is today's painting. This is composition on two men at a garage about to refit a big tyre. An ordinary enough subject, but to me a great chance to use darks and lights and create a composition. Watercolour on paper 7.5 x 5 ins.  www.mahonart.blogspot.ie

Wet in wet watercolour, muted, low key limited palette,

of the street outside Angel tube station in London, from a good few years back. I cannot recall the dimensions, alas.

Rising moon.

Another semi abstract watercolour painting. The moon rising over trees in a night landscape. On my way back from Kilkenny in December 2014. For me, an experiment in watercolour, to paint nocturnal scenes, without using anything other than watercolour. Painted wet in wet, with little detail. Approximately 7x10ins.

Landscape SE Ireland.

A watercolour landscape, here in SE Ireland,  from a few years back. Mostly muted colours with the clouds as the highlight. Watercolour on paper 7x10 ins. The area is very rural and often quite featureless, so it is difficult to pick out colours in a scene, often just green and more green. So the compromise, is to make the sky, or something else the highlight or focus of attention.

Road to Kilkenny, traffic and the moon.

On my way home from Kilkenny in Ireland, a wonderful full moon, the lights of cars heading to Kilkenny. A challenge to paint in watercolour, 7x10 ins on paper. I have been painting a lot of sunsets and low to fading light scenes, to challenge myself and also to experiment. I find myself using my imagination and intuition, and it's quite liberating.
