Surfers

Surfers, acrylic on panel. I have been experimenting with acrylics for a while, trying different approaches from using brush and palette knife to using just brushes. This one is using a palette knife and a limited palette.

Cottage by a road.

A cottage by a road near the sea. A simple study on panel 6x8 ins with acrylics using a palette knife. Sometimes simple is best, and I liked the simplicity of the scene

Off to the shop

Off to the shop.Acrylic study on paper 7x10 ins. A mother and child off to the shop to buy something. I used a limited palette on a warm ground of Naples yellow.

Break time

Figure on a beach

An experimental piece with acrylic ink over a watercolour in an attempt to make a watercolour vibrant and different. It was fun anyway regardless of what resulted. Acrylic inks neat over watercolour on paper  7x11 ins.

Friesan cows

Friesan cows. A painting in a Fauvist style. I used a limited palette of acrylic paints, delft blue, Karmine and titanium white, maybe a touch of pthalo blue red shade. Acrylic on stretched canvas 9x12 ins.

The train is here. I experimented with acrylic inks over watercolour, a train arriving at a station. I applied neat inks over a dry watercolour painting. 10x14 ins.

Fun

Fun. Acrylic on paper. This piece started out as a couple of figures on a beach and then I thought it's a bit dull and ordinary. Too many blue tones.

So I experimented a bit with liquid acrylics and a spatter technique to add some different effects. It's different, and even if the final piece is transformed for better or worse. The idea is to not be afraid to experiment, and one learns what effects to use or not in other pieces.

You first

You first. Acrylic ink on paper. I thought I would try out some acrylic inks. Very like watercolours, and can dilute with water as well. One difference is the intensity of the colours and washes can be layered over dried layers without the risk of lifting.

Time to go

Time to go. Two figures leaving a beach as evening draws in. An oil study on paper using impasto gel for heavy textural effects. The gel sets up very quickly and I would normally use a sturdier support such as a panel, when putting down heavy impasto, to avoid the possibility of any cracking in the future.

A pair

A pair, two apples. I very occasionally paint a still life and this simple composition was the result. Palette knife impasto on Arches oil paper.

A five minute study

A five minute oil study of a landscape. Oil on paper using a limited palette, ultramarine blue, cad yellow, titanium white and touch of permanent rose., A simple little composition to loosen up before or after more serious painting.
