Watercolour and limited palettes.

I have been mostly painting in watercolour recently, experimenting with a limited palette and getting used to using more opaque colours, like cad red light and cad yellow pale. My palette always had transparent colours and it's quite a change to introduce new colours. I swapped permanent magenta for permanent rose and cad pale yellow for winsor yellow and cad red light for scarlet lake.
Here is an example of my limited palette, cad red light, raw sienna, a touch of cad yellow pale and cobalt blue. www.mahonart.blogspot.ie

Check out my stuff on fine art America, http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/1-joseph-mahon.html?tab=artwork. I put some paintings up there last year, to sell as posters or greeting cards.

Mountains of Mourne.

The beautiful mountains of Mourne from the train to Belfast from Dublin. It was autumn and overcast, but the sun just lit up the sea for a minute. The palette is very subdued, and virtually all blues, cobalt, cerulean and ultramarine, due of course to the day and the scene. Watercolour in fabriano Artistico 300lbs paper 10x7 ins.

Another moody watercolour autumn landscape.

Another moody watercolour autumn landscape. It's based on the landscape near where I live. A farmhouse on the foot of Mt. Leinster, with the road leading up to the sunlit house. Fabriano artistico 300lbs paper 6x7 ins.

An old copper mine on the copper coast, Waterford, Ireland.

A moody landscape of the beautiful copper coast, in Waterford. A disused copper mine ruin still dominating the landscape. Watercolour on fabriano Artistico 300lbs paper. 7x10 ins. I left this one for a while, as I needed to think a little about it and his to make it a bit more dramatic, so I defined the foreground and made the point of interest the copper mine ruin against, a darker sky.

Elderly couple relaxing on the beach.

An impressionistic watercolour of an elderly couple on a beach. I left out the background, as I wanted  to concentrate on the couple, and keep it as simple as possible. I have out this little painting up for auction on Daily Paint Works. Fabriano artistico paper 5.25x7.25 ins.
